Once I started making my own cleaners, it just made sense to start cleaning up my cleaning supplies, too, by switching to reusable towels and other cleaning implements. It saves me money and it’s better for the environment.

I traded out all of my Swiffer pads for a few crocheted dusting pads, and I cut down some old towels to use as wet rags. For the rest of the cleaning, we purchased several packs of bar rags. These are perfect for everyday cleaning; they are just the right size and work great for cleaning up all the everyday spills at our house (and we have a lot of spills with a one year old).

Have you ever tried to wipe condensation off of a mirror or window? Then you know that towels do nothing but smear. Instead, we utilize the newspaper we get on the weekends. It’s simple: just crumple up a big sheet and use the newspaper the same way you would a paper towel.

We also made sure to stock up on plenty of hand towels so that when one got dirty or too wet, we could just reach for another and not have to pull out the paper towels. We do keep a few rolls of paper towels for emergencies, like the dog having an accident or my son puking, but I love that we don’t have to spend money on paper towels weekly any more, or worry about using the last roll and not having any in the house.

Does your family use any kind of reuseable cleaning supplies? Tell us about it!
